Mobile phones in the UK will receive a test Emergency Alert at approximately 3pm on Sunday 7 September 2025.

This is the second nationwide test of the system, designed to warn the public of life-threatening emergencies such as extreme weather.

During the test, phones will emit a loud siren and vibrate for around ten seconds, even if set to silent. A message will confirm that the alert is only a test.

The test is part of the government’s new Resilience Action Plan, aimed at enhancing national preparedness. A public information campaign will run ahead of the test, including information for vulnerable groups and British Sign Language materials.

To Opt Out

Some people may need to take action to avoid receiving this test alert eg victims of domestic abuse with a concealed phone.  In such cases, the person will need to opt out of receiving alerts. There is guidance on the gov.uk website about how to opt out.
