Bromley Well celebrates national Young Carers Awareness Day on 31st January

To mark this national event run by the Carers Trust, Bromley Well Young Carers (BWYC) Service are raising awareness about young carers in Bromley - what their needs are and what support is available for them.

The focus of this year’s Young Carers Awareness Day is the mental health of young carers and you can join in the conversation using #CareForMeToo. The Young Carers Team at BWYC help local young carers by providing a comprehensive range of practical and emotional support, free of charge, including workshops, leisure and social activities.

Joining forces with a local school

On 31st January, the team from Bromley Well are joining forces with the Young Carers Group at Bullers Wood School to attend a number of school assemblies to raise awareness of young carers and the importance of identifying them.

Millie, 17, a young carer from the group said “We wanted to go into assemblies to present our caring stories and the work we are doing in order to raise awareness of young carers of all ages. It is so important to identify young carers to make sure they remain supported within all aspects of life, since caring can be particularly hard to balance as a teenager.”

The BWYC Team will also be visiting a number of local schools, running workshops and sending information and resources to schools, GPs and health professionals.

“There are many young carers in Bromley who play a vital role in providing support within their families.” said Ellie Morris, Bromley Well Young Carers Coordinator. “Young Carers Awareness day is a great opportunity for us to try to reach out to those hidden young carers and make them aware of the support available to them. Being a young carer can have a big impact on a young person’s development - their health, education, friendships and family life. BWYCS can support young people by providing fun activity days where young carers can meet up and socialise as well as opportunities to talk in confidence about their caring role and any worries they might have.”
